Mile One Stadium in downtown St. John's replaced Memorial Stadium near Quidi Vidi Lake as the main hockey venue in St. John's. The old stadium sat idle. Dominion wanted to build a supermarket in that area. Preservationists objected. The solution was a supermarket that retained, insofar as possible, much of the old hockey arena. It is probably the only supermarket with a scoreboard! There are pairs of escalators: one for the people, one for the shopping carts! Only in St. John's would a supermarket have a sign that says "Closed Wednesday - weather permitting". I also was impressed with the parking spaces reserved for mothers with babies.
